Elye Wahi: “Didn’t want to go to Chelsea for the sake of it”

Elye Wahi was rumoured to join several clubs this summer. RC Len’s new striker is now speaking out about why the choice fell on the French top club.

Last season, Elye Wahi, 20, accounted for 19 goals and five assists in 33 league games for Montpellier.

The performances were rewarded with a lot of reported interest from other clubs, including Tottenham, Atlético Madrid, Arsenal, Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Two other clubs he was linked with were Chelsea and Eintracht Frankfurt, but instead it became RC Lens. Now Wahi tells us why.

“I didn’t want to go to Chelsea for the sake of it. Frankfurt was closer, closer than Chelsea.

I have no regrets.

“I spoke to the Frankfurt coach (Dino Toppmöller). He is French-speaking, which was important to me. They had to wait for the sale of Randal Kolo Muani, and waiting for it became too complicated. I have no regrets.

Last season, Lens finished second in Ligue 1, one point behind series-winning PSG.
